But Sharad Upadhyay’s `Rashichakra’ in which he analyses the characteristics of people based on their stars, is what dream success is all about. The one-man Marathi show, sans any grand set has been staged for over 10 years now and this week completed its show number 1,702 at Vishnudas Bhave auditorium in Vashi. Despite heavy showers and it being a weekday, the auditorium was jam packed for a 4 pm show by patrons who came for a hearty laugh and they were not disappointed.
During his three hour show, Updhayay starts of with analysing the symbol of each of the twelve sun signs, showing pictures of celebrities and politicians who have the same sign and then goes on to reveal the characteristics of people of those signs. His humorous analysis predominantly cites the relationships husband and wife and lovers. He also compares the different reactions of people of different signs under similar situations.
New Bombay Plus caught up with Upadhayay, who revealed that he was a serious astrologer who had conducted astrology classes and provided consultation for over 25 years. “It is by default that I am on stage. A friend who had attended my classes suggested that I do stage shows. I thought he was joking since I had no acting experience but upon his insistence I decided to do my first show in Nasik on February 23rd, 1993, so that no one in Mumbai would find out. But the response from the very first show has been so tremendous that there was no stopping and I have just gone on and on.”
Upadhyay has done around 30 shows in Navi Mumbai. “I have been lucky to have such audiences for all my shows whether in Navi Mumbai or elsewhere. They are mostly educated audience who understand my chatter! It gives immense pleasure when I see a wife nudging her husband confirming to him what I am saying about his sun sign. I consider this my subject’s success, not mine.” On the accuracy of his analysis and his light-hearted interpretation, Upadhayay candidly confesses that what he says on stage is only to create humour and entertain the people. “I make it very clear in the very beginning itself. There are over 10 to 15 crore people who have the same sign, how can they all have same characteristics. Its like saying that all Maharastrians are in service and all Gujaratis are businessmen. For those who want to get serious information they should come to me for consultation. It’s only entertainment here. Astrology has unnecessarily been made very dry by the astrologers,” he points out.
Recalling a touching experience, Upadhyay discloses, “Once during a show in Thane, when I was speaking on Dhanu Rashi, an elderly gentleman who was having a hearty laugh suffered a stroke and died. Later his widow came to me and said, everyone has to die some day, I am glad my husband passed away laughing. He was of Dhanu Rashi and was loving everything you said about its people. It was very touching.”
In his message to the patrons, Updhyay said, “Astrology is a vague science. There is no need to be very serious about it. There is talk of making it a university subject, which is ridiculous. Where will they get the lecturers? Every astrologer has his own theory. Though I am myself an astrologer I am against it. It requires very deep study to comment on astrological aspects. The celestial bodies are not greater than God, their creator. Pray to God and your problems will be solved.”
Others who are willing to wager a guess, like Sharad Joshi who teaches astrology at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, prefer to stick with the exit polls. Joshi is confident that the Congress-NCP will make the grade and Ashok Chavan will remain CM, but for some reason, he may not complete his term. Likewise Pune astrologer Siddheshwar Maratkar makes do with Chavan’s date of birth, October 28, 1958, to vouch that the CM will return to his seat. Maratkar double checks his predictions with the party’s date of birth as well, and for this reason, the nine-year-old NCP also earns his confidence. As for the party that is the buzz this election, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Maratkar sticks his neck out by defying the belief that the MNS will lend outside support to the Congress-NCP. “That will not happen,” he claims.
A brief conversation with MNS spokesperson Shirish Parkar would have helped him. “We will play an important role in government formation,” Parkar said to TOI Wednesday evening. “By the way, each astrologer is granting us a varying number of seats in the assembly.”
In the countdown to the big day, each party is closely studying a combination of exit polls and individual horoscopes to arrive at its own prospect chart. “We are looking at 60-65 seats,” says Sharad Pawar’s personal assistant T N Dhuwali.
Ignoring the Rahu (dragon’s head) and Ketu (dragon’s tail), namely the Congress-NCP alliance and the MNS, that squeeze its prospects, the Sena bravely places its faith in “anti-incumbency”. “You don’t need an astrologer to tell you that people are fed up with price rise, loadshedding, water shortage, and most of all, security,” says party secretary Anil Desai.
‘Bhavishyavar Bolu kahi’ a new programme on Mi Marathi channel, hosted by charming Sampada Kulkarni , is based on the doubts expressed by many viewers through their questions posted via e-mail. Sampada carries the public opinion and questions the expert guest Mr. Sharad Upadhye; who with his easy way of convincing clears all such doubts with his expertise. Watching the rising popularity of this programme on Mi Marathi, MMW paid a visit to their studio at Kurla and watched Mr. Upadhye being grilled with the questions posed by Sampada. But, the cool and composed expert appeared more than happy to answer all the questions by giving appropriate examples.
Speaking to MMW during the break, Mr. Upadhye suggested that for him every episode turns out to be more and more challenging as the host- Sampada, who is gaining more and more knowledge with the progress of every episode is coming up with interesting but tricky questions. “ It’s not that we do not prepare with our script, but many a times some of the explanations come spontaneously, arising out of the debate. And, that is the real fun about this programme.” he said. Talking about the success of lucky stone suited to an individual’s Zodiac sign, the expert was frank enough to state that not many can afford to buy these stones, which are so costly these days. And, even if someone is using them, all that they need to do is to observe purity in mind with devotion to God and at the same time possess good quality thoughts. Simply using a lucky stone with negative approach, is not going to work,” he concluded before leaving for his next shot.
Sampada Kulkarni the programme host, who is doing her Ph.D, seemed to be more enthusiastic about the conduct of this programme. Speaking about her personal experience, she said, “Though , this is not my subject for acquiring doctorate, I am very much fascinated about this subject. You get to learn so many things everyday. I take it as a process of learning, though I am acting as a coordinator between the viewers and the Guest. I like the way Sir responds to my doubts so spontaneously. Many a times, the discussion goes on without a cut. Watching me in this role, some of my co-stars now a days catch hold of me for sharing knowledge on this subject, while I am shooting elsewhere. That’s the biggest compliment.”
Young Rohit Salvi, who is directing this TV programme, said that they are trying to create awareness among the viewers by picking up different topics. “Our special guest Mr. Upadhye gives minute details with his humour filled approach while answering every question”. Executive Producer Anuja Sobale who is conducting this curiosity based programme, suggests the viewers to be more active through their participation by way of mailing their topics of interest with questions. काहीतरी अपेक्षेने किंवा नवस बोलण्यासाठी देवदर्शनाला जाणाऱ्यांची संख्या मोठ्या प्रमाणात वाढत आहे. मंदिरात भक्तांपेक्षा याचकांचीच गर्दी जास्त असते. गणेश या देवतेबद्दल तर ‘नवसाला पावणारा गणपती’ ही संकल्पना भलतंच स्वार्थी मूळ धरू लागली आहे. समाजमनावर याचा विपरीत परिणाम होतोय. ज्या गणेशाने सर्व मोह, लोभ, विकारांचा त्याग केला, त्या वीतरागी गणेशाकडे नवस बोलणं हे ईश्वरीय अज्ञानाचं द्योतक आहे.

हे गिरिजाकुमरा गजानना, लंबोदरा, विघ्नहरा तुला माझा शिरसाष्टांग नमस्कार.
गणराया, जे भक्त तुझे चिंतन करतात, त्यांना विघ्नं बाधत नाहीत. त्यांच्या सर्व शुभ आकांक्षा पुऱ्या होतात. म्हणून सर्व मंगल कार्यारंभी तुला वंदन करण्याची पद्धत आहे. तू चतुर्दश विद्यांचा स्वामी आहेस. वेद, शास्त्रे आणि पुराणे हे तुझेच ध्वनी आहेत. कृपानिधी गणनाथा, अभयदाता विनायका, माझ्या बुध्दीमध्ये चैतन्य येऊ दे. माझ्या मनामध्ये जीवनमुक्त होण्याची वासना प्रबळ होत आहे. ती पुरी व्हावी यासाठी मी तुला साष्टांग नमस्कार करतो.
खरं म्हणजे कुठल्याही उपासनेचा अंतिम हेतू मोक्षप्राप्तीच हवा. जन्ममरणाचे फेरे चुकवण्यासाठी अत्यंत तळमळीने, कष्टाने प्रखर उपासना केली पाहिजे. गणेशाच्या उपासकांना ‘स्वानंद लोक’ प्राप्त होतो आणि पुन्हा जन्म घ्यावा लागत नाही. अनादि काळापासून मंगलमय स्वरूपाची ही देवता आहे. ‘श्री गणेशय नम:’ याच मंत्राने कुठल्याही शुभ कार्याचा आरंभ होतो. विश्वमाता आणि विश्वपिता असलेल्या पार्वती-महादेवांनीच गणेशाला प्रथम पूजेचा मान दिला आहे. विघ्नांवर, संकटांवर संपूर्ण नियमन असलेली ही गणेशदेवता भक्तांची विघ्नं सहज दूर करते.
सिद्धी आणि बुद्धी या गणेशाच्या दोन शक्ती. म्हणून कुठलेही कार्य करण्यास लागणारी बौद्धिक प्रेरणा गणेशाच्या कृपेनेच मिळते. सर्व देवांचा आद्य-पूजनीय अनंतकोटिब्रह्मांडनायक, गणांचा अध्यक्ष ब्रह्माणस्पती, सकल विद्यांचा निधी, निर्गुणाचाही मूळारंभ असा जो हेरंब, अष्टसिद्धीयुक्त असून त्याची कृपा असीम असते हे निजभक्तांचे अनुभव आहेत.
अध्यात्म हा विषय अंत:करणात उचंबळणाऱ्या अवर्णनीय भक्तीप्रेमाचा हवा. निखळ प्रेमाला बुद्धी, पांडित्य, व्यवहार अभिप्रेत नसतात. या परमार्थाच्या वाटचालीत निर्व्याज प्रेमाची, अव्याभिचारी भक्तीची, स्फटिकासारख्या स्वच्छ पारदर्शक अंत:करणाची नितांत आवश्यकता असते. पूजा करताना, भगवंताच्या लीला ऐकताना, प्रार्थना करताना, नाम स्मरताना, ईश्वरप्रेमाने ज्याचं अंत:करण भरून येत नाही, कंठ दाटून येत नाही, डोळे पाणावत नाहीत, हृदयात ब्रह्मारूप प्रकटत नाही त्याची भक्ती वांझ असते. ईश्वरचरणी सर्वस्वाने वाहिलेलं मन हीच खरी पूजा होते.
दुदैर्वाने अशी भक्ती पाहावयास मिळत नाही. काहीतरी अपेक्षेने किंवा नवस बोलण्यासाठी देवदर्शनाला जाणाऱ्यांची संख्या मोठ्या प्रमाणात वाढत आहे. मंदिरात भक्तांपेक्षा याचकांचीच गदीर् जास्त असते. गणेश या देवतेबद्दल तर ‘नवसाला पावणारा गणपती’ ही संकल्पना भलतंच स्वाथीर् मूळ धरू लागली आहे. समाजमनावर याचा विपरीत परिणाम होतोय. ज्या गणेशाने सर्व मोह, लोभ, विकारांचा त्याग केला, त्या वीतरागी गणेशाकडे नवस बोलणं हे ईश्वरीय अज्ञानाचं द्योतक आहे. आपले प्रश्न पुरूषार्थाने, विवेकाने, अध्यात्मिक साधनेने आपणच सोडवायचे असतात. पण लोकसमूहाला स्वाथीर्, मतलबी ठेकेदारांनी नवसाच्या फळाची प्रलोभनं दाखवली आहेत. गणेश भावाचा भुकेला आहे, नवसफेडीच्या वस्तूंचा नाही. गणेशचतुथीर्पासून अनंत चतुर्दशीपर्यंतचा सार्वजनिक गणेशोत्सव सोहळा चालू करताना लोकमान्यांच्या मनात फार उदात्त लोकजागरणच्या भावना होत्या. कारण गणेश ही बुद्धीची देवता आहे. या सार्वजनिक कार्यक्रमातून वैचारिक उद्बोधन व्हावं, अंधश्रद्धा नाहीशा व्हाव्यात, मरगळ, निराशा नष्ट व्हावी, प्रबोधनाने जनतेचा आत्मविश्वास वाढावा, प्राप्त परिस्थितीवर मात करण्याचे कौशल्य आत्मसात कसं करावं याबद्दलची व्याख्यानं व्हावी अशा उत्तमोत्तम संकल्पना मांडून त्या महापुरुषाने सर्वजनिक गणेशोत्सवाची सुरुवात केली. पण आज त्या संकल्पनेचा फज्जा उडालेला दिसतो. भक्तीभावना तर फोफावत नाहीच. पण अनेक वाममागीर् धंदे उत्सवाच्या नावाखाली चालतात.
१) जबरदस्तीने वर्गण्या वसूल करणं.
२) गजाननांच्या प्राणप्रतिष्ठा केलेल्या पवित्र मूतीर्समोर अश्लील सिनेमे, अर्वाच्य भाषा असलेली नाटके, ऑकेर्स्ट्राचा, धांगडधिंगा, कार्यर्कत्यांचं रात्री दारू पिऊन पत्ते खेळणं, दोन मंडळांतल्या मारामाऱ्या पर्यायाने सामाजिक अशांतता दिसते.
३) मोठ्या आवाजातल्या लाऊडस्पीकरने प्रचंड ध्वनिप्रदूषण, ज्येष्ठ नागरिकांच्या आरोग्याचा विचार न करणं, गणेशमूतीर् आणताना आणि विसर्जन करताना फटाक्यांच्या माळा लावणं, ताशा वाजवणं, तान्ही मुलं, वृद्ध व्यक्ती,रुग्ण यांचा विचार न करणं, रस्त्यारस्त्यावर गणेशमूतीर् स्थापन करून ट्रॅफिक जाम करणं हे लोकमान्यांना अभिप्रेत होते काय? या सर्वांत गणेशाबद्दल प्रेम किती आणि स्वत:चा आनंद किती हा विचार केल्यास सार्वजनिक गणेशोत्सवात विधायक असं फारसं काही घडत नसून स्वार्थ साधण्याची वृत्ती बळावताना दिसते.
४) भक्तीभावाने गोड स्वरात आरत्या ऐकू येत नाहीत. विचारांची भाषणं होत नाहीत. मार्गदर्शन, प्रबोधन कार्यक्रम नसतात. गणपती विसर्जनाच्या दिवशीही गणेशाला निरोप देताना कंठ दाटून आलेले, व्याकूळ झालेले भक्त दिसत नाहीत. उलट अचकट विचकट हावभाव, उद्वेगजनक अंगविक्षेप, मद्यपान करून धुंद नाचत गुलाल उधळणं या सर्व गोष्टीत काय अध्यात्म आहे, हेच समजत नाही.
५) गणपतीच्या देवळात उलटं चालत जाणं, तासन्तास रांगेत उभे राहणं, नवस बोलून देवाला वेठीस धरणं, हार-तुरे-मिठाई यावर पैसे उधळणं हे सर्व करण्यापेक्षा गणेशाची मनापासून उपासना करणं, प्रेमाने स्तोत्र म्हणणं, आपल्याकडून शांततेचा भंग होणार नाही ही काळजी घेणं, मनोरंजनाच्या नावाखाली होणारी पैशांची उधळपट्टी थांबवून तोच पैसा गोरगरिबांच्या अन्नदान, वस्त्रदान, विद्यादान या गरजांसाठी दिल्यास गजाननांची केवढी प्रसन्नता प्राप्त करून घेता येईल!
सूज्ञ भक्तांनी उत्सवाचा उद्देश, भक्तीची मूळ संकल्पना समजून घ्यायला हवी. माझा खूप मोठा प्रेमसखा गणेशा आहे याचीच नेमकी विस्मृती होते. सिनेमा-नाटके-वाद्यवृंद-लावण्या यांचा गजाननांच्या भक्तीशी काहीही संबंध नाही तो अपवित्र धांगडधिंगा प्राणप्रतिष्ठीत पवित्र गणेशमूतीर्समोर घालून आपण पापंच जोडत आहोत हे विचार केल्यास कळेल.
गणेशोत्सवाच्या काळात ५०-५० पावलांवर नव्या मंडळांच्या गणेशमूतीर् स्थापन होतात. सहस्त्रावर्तनाच्या उद्देशाने शेकडो लिटर दूधाचा अभिषेक होतो. ते दूध गरीब कुपोषित बालकांना प्यायला मिळाल्यास गणेशाची केवढी मोठी कृपा प्राप्त करून घेता येईल!
एखाद्या गणेश मंदिरात उसळणारी भक्तांची गदीर् हे त्या देवळाचं किंवा त्या मूतीर्चं ‘नवसाला पावणारी देवता’ हे गमक नसून स्वत:च्या स्वार्थ साधण्यासाठी होणारी ती लोभी माणसांची गदीर् आहे, निजभक्तांची नव्हे. कारण खरा भक्त मंदिरात कधीही याचना करत नाही तर फक्त व्याकूळ प्रार्थना करतो. मनुष्य जगण्यासाठी जन्माला येत नाही, जाणण्यासाठी येतो. सकाम भक्ती जीवनाचा व्यापार असतो. निष्काम भक्ती आत्म्याचा आनंद असतो. लोकांची गदीर् वाढावी. पर्यायाने दानपेटीत भरपूर माया जमावी या उद्देशाने ‘जागृत देवस्थान’, ‘नवसाला पावणारा गणपती’ असे चमत्कार अभिप्रेत असतील तर तिथे स्वाथीर् गदीर् असेल पण जाणकार ददीर् नसतील. चमत्काराच्या जोरावर लोकांना आपल्याकडे आकृष्ट करून घेणं म्हणजे परमार्थातली वेश्यागिरी करण्यासारखं आहे. साक्षात्कार हा परमार्थमार्गाचा कळस आहे.
देवाला नवसफेडीची लालूच दाखविणाऱ्या अज्ञानी भक्तांनी साधा विचार करावा त्या अनंतकोटी ब्रम्हांडनायकाला आपण एवढेसे चिमुकले जीव काय देणार! त्या कर्तुमकर्तुम महाशक्तीला आपल्यासारख्या क्षुद, र्मत्य माणसांकडून कोणती अपेक्षा असणार? कोटी सूर्यांचं तेज असणाऱ्या त्या महाशक्तीला आपण चिमुकल्या निरांजनाने ओवाळतो हा आपला आनंद आहे. मोठेपणाच्या भावनेने आपण देवासाठी जे जे करतो ते सारे परमात्म्यानेच निर्माण केले आहे, हे विसरू नये. फळं, फुलं, जल ही सर्व त्याचीच निमिर्ती नव्हे का? माझे अमूक काम झाल्यास मी तमुक वस्तू तुला देईन असा नवस बोलून आपण त्या विराट शक्तीला किती कमी लेखतो. नित्य तृप्त परमात्मा कशाचीही अपेक्षा करत नाही. तान्हं मूल स्वतंत्रपणे काहीही करू शकत नाही तर त्याचं सर्व आईलाच करावं लागतं. तरीही या एका गोष्टीने आई कंटाळत नाही. उलट त्याचं सर्व करताना मातेला खूप आनंद होतो, धन्य वाटतं. ती गोष्ट म्हणजे त्या तान्हुल्याचा निरागस चेहरा, निष्पाप डोळे, आई दिसली नाही की कासावीस होणं, त्याचं निर्व्याजपण आणि आईला पाहताच खुदकन हसणं एका आईशिवाय त्याला काहीही सुचत नाही.
अति चांगट जरी ललना। खेळ भातुके देता नाना।
तेथे न जडे बाळभावना। कुरूपहीन माता गोड।।
तशी भक्ताची अवस्था होणं आणि त्या भावावस्थेत परमेश्वराची उत्कट भक्ती करणं हेच आध्यात्माचं रहस्य आहे. अभक्तीने केलेले राजोपचारही परमात्म्याला रुचत नाहीत. काही अपेक्षा मनात ठेवून ईश्वरसेवा करणं हा व्याभिचारी व्यवहार होतो आणि व्यवहारात कुठली आली- आपुलकी, जवळीक आणि ओलावा! म्हणून वरवरची बेगडी भक्ती ठेवून सेवेचं प्रदर्शन करू नये. प्रेम नसलेली पण अपेक्षा असलेली गणिकाच प्रेमाचं जास्त प्रदर्शन करते. पण प्रेमाने ओथंबलेली गृहिणी फक्त अबोल त्यागच करत असते. मणभर पेढ्यांपेक्षा कणभर प्रेमच श्रेष्ठ असतं.
गणपती उत्सवानंतर कुठल्या गणपती मंडळाला किती किलो सोनं मिळालं, किती लाख रुपये मिळाले, हिऱ्याचा मोबाईल मिळाला, कोणत्या देवस्थानाचे उत्पन्न सर्वाधिक अशा बातम्या सचित्र पेपरमध्ये किंवा वाहिन्यांवर दाखवल्या जातात तेव्हा या सर्वांची कीव करावीशी वाटते. गजाननांचा साक्षात्कार कोणाला झाला, मानसिक किंवा आत्मिक शांती किती जणांना मिळाली, प्रबोधनामुळे किती जीवने सुधारली त्याबद्दल एकही उदाहरण छापून येत नाही किंवा दाखवलं जात नाही म्हणून उत्सव मंडळं ही मोठी आथिर्क उलाढाली करणारी केंदं होऊ नयेत. कारण खऱ्या भक्तीचा त्यात लवलेशही नसतो. उलट देवाच्या नावावर धांगडधिंगा घातल्याने ते विकृत स्वरूप आस्तिकालाही नास्तिक करण्याचा संभव असतो.
सावधान! यापुढे धांगडधिंग्याची ही सर्व पध्दत बंद करून खऱ्या गणेशभक्ताने त्याच्या चरणी प्रार्थना करावी…
